Welcome to 'Teaching the Teacher'. This website originally started as a blog, but has now be migrated to a website. The blog originally started as a way for myself to reflect on my teaching, so the title was more aimed at my own practice than other teachers out there. However, I really believe sharing is the best practice that we as teachers can do, so I hope you find something useful on this site that you can use. Much of the content from the blog will be exported to this site, but there will of course be new stuff uploaded as time goes by. So, the only thing left for me to say is... let's go!
My name is Simon and I have been a teacher for over 10 years. Although it is true that I fell into the profession when I left my job as a theatre technician and moved to Japan to teach, I have, in the last 4 years, started to see how important education is.
I lived in Japan for 7 years where I taught in kindergartens, primary, Jr. High, and high schools. I have also taught in universities and have conducted business training courses for Yanmar, Bando, and Hitachi. I then said good bye to my life in Japan and moved to Malaysia to pursue a Masters in TESOL, which I graduated from in 2013. Since then I have been an active researcher whereby my interests include: project-based learning (PBL), task-based learning, assessment (self, peer, co-created), e-learning, collaboration, and recently positive psychology with the study of well-being.
Apart form teaching and research I am also the co-founder of 'Stories from...' which is an initiative with the aim to tell the stories from our local community. So far we have published one book, Almost Home, which contains the adapted recollections of refugee and stateless children. We are also working on the second book, As Life Found Me, which brings stories from the special needs community to light.
When I'm not teaching or researching, I am an avid reader and traveller. I have been to over 30 countries with some of the highlights being Mongolia, the trans Siberian express, North Korea, Tibet and Cuba.
